ThrillerFest in New York!

In just a few days I’ll be heading to New York.

Yes, the mothership for writers.

The reason I’m going, besides the general awesomeness of NYC? I’m going to ThrillerFest! It’s an annual conference for thriller writers and readers, hosted by the International Thriller Writers. (And in this instance we’re talking about thrillers in the broadest sense–including mystery, suspense, crime, action-adventure, historical thrillers, YA thrillers…)

Here are some of the big-name authors who will be attending: Lee Child, David Baldacci, Lisa Gardner, Scott Turow, Brenda Novak, Steve Berry, Ian Rankin, Anne Rice…and the list goes on!

I’ve been a member of the ITW (International Thriller Writers) since my first book was published, but I’ve never been to ThrillerFest before. I was incredibly honored and excited when I was invited to speak on a panel at this year’s conference.

The panel I’ll be speaking on is called WHAT’S YOUR CUTTING EDGE? Medical Advances That Create Thrills. And because I’m speaking, I’ll be signing books in the conference bookstore, too. So fun.

There’s an amazing lineup of workshops and panels. Besides all the bigwigs I listed above who will be giving workshops and talks, there are some surprises in store for conference attendees. For example, the deputy assistant director of the US Secret Service will be giving a special workshop called The Insider’s View Of The Secret Service.

How cool is that?

While I’m in New York, I’ll be visiting the offices of my publisher, Kensington, and having lunch with my editor, Peter Senftleben. Later, I’ve got a dinner date with my agent, Sandy Lu. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll get to take advantage of an hour or two of downtime and do a little shopping, New York-style.

Excited much???

The only downside: it’s going to be hard to be away from my boys for five days. Truly, I hate being apart from them. But…I’ll do my best to comfort myself with a hotel bed ALL TO MYSELF. And an uninterrupted shower. EVERY DAY. And grown-up publishing lunches!! During which I’m assuming my dining companions WON’T need me to cut their meat up for them…

Anyway. I’d better get packing. I think I’m going to need a separate suitcase for all my shoes.

After the conference I’ll report here with lots of pics, so be sure to check back!

  1. In a few words, was it worth it? The flight? The hotel? The conference? Could you attend all the session you wanted or were they booked out? I think this is a big-ticket conference and have thought about attending. I will be going to Bouchercon in Long Beach this fall and am very excited about that.

      Hi Jim!
In a word–yes. It was worth it. I’m working on a wrap-up post about it, but in the meantime: it was excellent. So many opportunities for networking, lots of great people, the hotel was fantastic, and the sessions/workshops were, for the most part, great. No problem getting into any sessions–worst case scenario, you’re just standing at the back of the room if there are no more seats available. Granted, it WAS expensive, but depending on your goals and the stage of your career, TOTALLY worth it.

Bouchercon will be awesome!! Have fun.

  2. […] The highlight of my July, hands down, was going to New York City for Thrillerfest. Before jetting off for NYC, I was pretty excited. […]
