finding time to write
This weekend I was a presenter at my favorite writing conference EVER…the
Surrey International Writers’ Conference. It was a magical weekend, as it always is. I’ve been going to SiWC for well over a decade now.
One of the workshops I gave was on the topic of finding the time to write. It seems to be a pretty universal concern for writers, and the people in the room with me this weekend were clamoring for any pieces of advice I could give them on this problem.…

Just in time for
NaNoWriMo I thought I’d do a post about how to write a first draft. Because let’s face it, first drafts are hard.
It’s no secret, it’s not my favorite part of the process. I love the outlining/dreaming/planning stages, and I love the revising/shaping/polishing stages. The first draft stage? Not so much.
But it’s okay. It has to get done.…

I haven’t always been a morning person. But when various factors collided (specifically,
getting a book contract to produce three novels in three years, coupled with the fact that quitting my day job was not an option…mostly because my children had grown rather accustomed to eating food on a regular basis)
I had to come up with a new plan.…

My husband took our boys out of town for three days. The main reason, as it happens, was to give me a bunch of time to write–because I am knee-deep in
revisions for my sequel.
So while they were gone–leaving me alone in my own house for the first time in years–here’s what I did: I wrote, of course. Tons.…

I recently read the book On The Island by Tracey Garvis Graves. Admittedly, my primary reason for reading it was my fascination with this author’s path to publication. This is a woman who, after slugging it out trying to get her novel published via the traditional route, decided to self-publish. Now, publishing a novel yourself–if you’re hoping for any degree of success–is notoriously difficult.…

A while ago I wrote a post about the
perfect food pairings for a writing life. But I’d like to expand on that and talk about something near and dear to my little heart: the brown gold otherwise known as coffee.
To my mind, coffee is the perfect desk accessory when you’re writing. Allow me to make my case? (Or, indulge me as I wax about my love…)
Coffee is warm, cozy, and comforting.…

I don’t know how you do it all.
People say this to me, from time to time. And they’re referring to the fact that, admittedly, I have a fair few things on the go. But I’m not alone in this–MANY moms have multiple roles, multiple responsibilities.
Truth be told, sometimes I’m not exactly sure how I do manage it. Also, sometimes I *don’t* manage it, and then the meltdown begins. …

Becoming a mother is a game changer. Big time. Suddenly, you’ve got so much more to think about than yourself, and at its most basic level it feels RIGHT for your little darlings’ needs to come ahead of yours. When my kids are sick I wish I could take it on, instead of them. If there’s one cookie left in the cookie jar, I give it to my doe-eyed little guy instead of gobbling it down myself.…

As you may know, I maintain two other blogs:

Here’s what I blogged about this week:
How To Treat Head Lice
I know, you’re probably getting that creepy-crawly feeling just thinking about it, right? But if you’ve got school-aged kids, you *might* want to keep this article handy.…

This will probably be a common theme for this blog as it is my neverending challenge and my bête noir. As a mom of two, with a full-time job, carving out the time to do the other things I love is a huge issue.
Many of you can relate, I’m sure–and it doesn’t just apply to writing. I have yet to meet a mom who isn’t absolutely starved for “me time”.…
